Bradley Advances at ITA Indoors; Hurricanes Conclude Day One of UNC Invitational

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Senior Megan Bradley earned a birth into the semifinals of the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships with wins in Friday’s second and quarterfinal rounds at the University of Michigan Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Bradley, ranked second in the nation in singles, won in Friday’s second round slate by rallying from behind after falling 6-1 the first set to down No. 24 Margarita Karnaukhova of Sacramento State in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
With the win over Karnaukhova, Bradley advanced to the afternoon’s quarterfinal round where she drew Kentucky’s Aibika Kalsarieva, the nation’s ninth-ranked singles player. Bradley would cruise past Kalsarieva, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 to qualify for Saturday’s semifinals where she will take on USC’s Nicole Leimbach.
In doubles play, Bradley and sophomore Audrey Banada fell in the quarterfinals to No. 2 seed Catrina Thompson and Christian Thompson of Notre Dame, 8-5.
Meanwhile, four additional members of the University of Miami women’s tennis team competed at the UNC-Kitty Harrison Invitational Friday in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Highlighting Friday’s play at UNC were junior Melissa Applebaum and freshman Emily Mowery, who each recorded a pair of wins against players from North Carolina and Wake Forest.
Applebaum, ranked No. 121 in the country, opened the day with a win over Sara Anundsen of UNC in a third-set tiebreak, 0-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) before going on to upend Wake Forest’s Katie Martzolf in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
Mowery overtook Danielle Schwartz of Wake Forest, 6-1, 7-6(4), 1-0 (10-5) following a victory over the Tar Heels’ Jenna Long in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6.
UM freshman Caren Seenauth also claimed a win Friday, defeating Charlotte Tansill of UNC, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6).
The Hurricanes will return for day two of the UNC-Kitty Harrison Invitational Saturday, with play slated to begin at 9 a.m.
