Hurricanes Defeat FIU in Season Opener
Oct. 16, 2004
Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami swimming and diving team defeated cross-town rival Florida International, 97-80, Saturday afternoon at the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool.
“This was a good way to start the season,” said head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny. “We raced hard but still have a lot to address before our next meet.”
The Hurricanes started the meet with a 1-2 finish in the 400-yd medley relay. The quartet of Katalin Ferenczi, Colleen Adkins, Andrea Hughes and Ashley Knapp touched with a time of 4:02.32 to take first place.
Freshman Lauren Shue made her debut by winning both the 1000-yrd and 500-yrd freestyle with a time of 10:26.70 and 5:05.84, respectively.
The 200-yrd freestyle event saw a freshmen sweep as rookies Taylor McFarlane (1:55.78), Capria DeVenuto (2:00.08), and Casey Heffernan (2:03.14) took first, second and third.
“I was happy with the freshman,” noted Podkoscielny. “I thought that they would be timid and not really go after races but they knew how to race and did what we asked.”
The 400-yrd individual medley was also a 1-2-3 finish for the Hurricanes with senior Katalin Ferenczi coming in first with a time of 4:34.49 followed by classmates Adrian Ferguson (4:37.32) and Lindsay Knapp (4:41.62).
Rookie diver Jenna Dreyer took home first place in both diving events, winning the 1-meter with a score of 230.70 and the 3-meter with a 331.50. Sophomore Heather Bounds came in second in both events (1-meter, 217.95; 3-meter, 297.53).
“Next we have Virginia, who is among the top 15 and Virginia Tech, who was one of the best teams in the BIG EAST and made the move to the ACC. It’ll be good competition but we still need to work on some things before we get there, “concluded Podkoscielny.
The Hurricanes will travel to Virginia, Oct. 22 and Virginia Tech, Oct. 23 for their first Atlantic Coast Conference Meets.
