Hurricanes Fall to No. 2 North Carolina 5-1

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Senior forward Britney Butcher scored the Hurricanes’ lone goal as the University of Miami soccer team fell to No. 2 North Carolina 5-1 Thursday night at the SAS Soccer Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Butchers’ goal – her second on the season – came in the 84th minute with UM trailing 5-0. With the loss, Miami falls to 2-7-0 overall and 1-5-0 in the ACC this season. The Tar Heels improve to 11-0-1 on the year with an unbeaten mark of 4-0-0 in ACC play.
North Carolina opened the scoring in the first period on a header from the six yard line by Heather O’Reilly at the 5:09 mark.
Jamie Gilbert scored Carolina’s second goal of the evening, beating UM keeper Alex Alford from approximately 12 yards out in the 20th minute to put UNC up 2-0. The Tar Heels maintained the lead for the remainder of the first period.
O’Reilly added her second goal of the match in the second half, scoring in the 63rd minute followed by a pair of goals by Robyn Gayle and Corinne Black in the 73rd and 77th minutes, respectively.
The Hurricanes return to action Sunday, taking on ACC rival Wake Forest in Winston Salem, N.C. at 1 p.m.
