Hurricanes Come Up Short in 2-1 Decision with No. 17 Auburn
Sept. 10, 2004
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami could not hold off No. 17 Auburn, surrendering a game-winning goal in the 86th minute to give the Tigers (5-0-0) a 2-0 win Friday afternoon in the Hurricanes’ (0-3-0) home opener at Cobb Stadium.
Miami greeted a potent Auburn attack that entered the match outscoring opponents 11-2 in four matches in 2004 with strong opposition scoring the first goal of the match in the 22nd minute when junior forward Lindsey Yach drilled a penalty kick to left of Auburn goalie Megan Rivera to put the Hurricanes up 1-0.
UM held on to the lead through the remainder of the first period and 21 minutes into the second until Auburn’s Kristen Stewart crossed to ball to an open Sarah Steinmann in the far post, who hit the left side of the goal to tie the game at 1-1 at the 66:15 mark.
Freshman goalkeeper Lauren McAdam recorded two saves as the Hurricane defended an Auburn attack that included four shots through the next 19 minutes until the Tigers’ Courtney Crandell put a shot just outside of a diving McAdam to give Auburn the game-winning goal in the 86th minute.
“Overall, I think we played well despite seeming out of rhythm at times. We just missed a couple of key opportunities we had and that’s something we just can’t do in these close matches,” Head Coach Tricia Taliaferro said.
“I was pleased with the level of competitiveness we came out with and really think our backs – Kristen Chapman and Ashley Durkee – played extremely well. Today was definatley an improvement and it was good to see things we have addressed in practice really show up in the match,” Taliaferro added.
Sunday’s scheduled match with Marquette has been cancelled as the Hurricanes return to action Sept. 17, hosting ACC-rival NC State at 7 p.m. at Cobb Stadium.
