Former UM Swimmer Makes Canadian Olympic Team

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Former University of Miami swimming great Rhiannon Leier turned in the third fastest time in the world this season while breaking the Canadian record in the 100-meter breaststroke July 7 at the 2004 Canadian Olympic Team Trials in Etobicoke, Ontario, ensuring her spot on the Canadian Olympic Swim Team.

Leier, a six-time All-American at Miami from 1996-99 and the school record holder in the 100-breaststroke (1:02.44), touched in with a time of 1:08.14 in the 100-meter breaststroke at the Olympic Trials, topping the six-year previous national record of 1:08.66.

Leier also qualified for the 200-meter breaststroke with a second-place time of 2:29.15 at the trials.

Current Miami swimmer and sophomore to-be, Nancy Gajos, also competed at the 2004 Canadian Trials, but fell shy of the Olympic Team qualifying marks with a 14th-place finish in the 100-meter butterfly (1:03.58) and a 19th-place finish in the 200-meter butterfly (2:20.37).
