Hurricane Divers Qualify for NCAA Championships

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Junior Miguel Velazquez (Mexico City, Mexico) took a first-place finish in the men’s platform finals Sunday at the NCAA Zone B Diving Trials at the Gabrielson Natatorium in Athens, Ga. to earn his second spot in the Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships on March 25-27 in Long Island, N.Y.

Velazquez recorded an overall score of 593.25 to place ahead Auburn’s Caesar Garcia, earning an automatic bid to the national championships. Velazquez qualified for the NCAA’s in the one-meter Saturday.

Freshman Derek Starks (Mission, Veijo) also earned his first birth to the NCAA Championships with a fifth place dive of 529.85.

On the women’s side, freshman Heather Bounds (Austin, Texas) placed fourth in the women’s platform finals with a score of 397.45.
