Hurricanes Wrap up Day One of NCAA Zone B Diving Trials

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s and women’s diving teams concluded day one of the 2004 NCAA Zone B diving trials with three top-15 finishes Friday at the Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga.

Junior two-time All-American Miguel Velazqez (Mexico City, Mexico) turned in a seventh place finish in the men’s three-meter springboard with a total score of 550.50. Freshman Derek Starks (Mission Viejo, Calif.) placed 15th, posting a mark of 508.60 in the final round.

Senior two-time All-American Emily Spychala (Tampa, Fla.) placed 11th in the women’s one meter finals, recording a score of 531.85. Freshman Heather Bounds (Austin, Texas) also competed for the UM women.

The Hurricanes return Saturday for day two with the men’s one-meter prelims slated for 10 a.m. followed by the women’s three-meter at 3:45 p.m.
