Hurricanes Roll Over Penn, 5-2

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Sophomore Colin Purcell (Louisville, Ky.) won in straight sets at No. 5 singles to seal a win for the 32nd-ranked University of Miami men’s tennis team over Pennsylvania, 5-2 Wednesday night at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
Miami (9-0) struck first against the Quakers (6-2) with UM teammates John Hoyes (Miami, Fla.) and Eric Hechtman (Miami, Fla.) downing Craig Rubin and Jimmy Fairbanks, 8-5 at No. 3 doubles. The Quakers answered with David Lynn and Mikhail Bekker winning over Jeremiah Fuller (Emmaus, Pa.) and Josh Cohen (Weston, Fla.), 9-8 at No. 2. With the doubles point at stake, Purcell along with Tim Krebs (Eschborn, Germany) paired up in the No. 1 slot to hold off UP’s Anthony Pu and Justin Lavner, 8-3.
Cohen would lead the Miami surge in singles play, overpowering Lynn, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 followed by Hechtman’s victory over Lavner (6-4, 6-2) at No. 3.
With UP trailing 3-0, Penn’s Bekker upended Hoyes, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 to put the Quakers on the board.
Purcell then ended a late comeback in the second set by Todd Lecher to win 6-1, 7-5 at the No. 5 spot to seal the Hurricane victory, giving Miami their ninth win of the year.
With the match decided, UP’s Rubin edged out Krebs, 4-6, 6-4, (10-8) at No. 4 while Miami’s Fuller defeated Fairbanks, 6-4, 4-6, (10-6) at No. 6.
The undefeated Hurricanes return to action Friday, hosting in-state rival Florida State at 6 p.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Admission is free and fans are invited out for free food catered by Monty’s. Fans can follow the Hurricanes’ match with FSU live on hurricanesports.com.
