Miami Swimming and Diving Wraps up Second Day of BIG EAST Championships

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Senior All-American Emily Spychala (Tampa, Fla.) turned in her second consecutive second-place finish of the 2004 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships with a score of 459.80 in the women’s three-meter springboard finals Friday night at the Nassau County Aquatics Center in East Meadows, N.Y.
Notre Dame’s Meghan Perry-Eaton took first place in the three-meter with a score of 509.05 while the Hurricanes’ Heather Bounds (Austin, Texas) finished third with a score of 446.90.
Spychala finished second in the one-meter springboard Thursday at the opening day of the conference championships.
Fellow Hurricane freshman Derek Starks (Mission Viejo, Calif.) returned to the board Friday after taking the BIG EAST title in the men’s three-meter springboard Thursday to place second in the one-meter with a score of 309.75.

The women’s swim team turned in a solid performance in the finals of day two highlighted by sophomore Martyna Krawczyk’s (Looz, Poland) top-place finish in the consolation finals of the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.19 and freshman Andrea Hughes’ (Richmond, Va.) second-place finish in the consolation finals of 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.12 to lead the UM women into eighth place overall heading into the final day of competition.
UM will return for the third and final day of the BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships Friday with preliminaries beginning at 10:30 a.m.
