Men's Tennis Knocks Off Florida Atlantic, 6-1

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 34th-ranked University of Miami men’s tennis team won all but one singles point to defeat in-state foe Florida Atlantic, 6-1 on Wednesday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center to remain undefeated on the season at 3-0.
Miami’s duo of Eric Hechtman (Miami, Fla.) and John Hoyes (Miami, Fla.) struck first for the Hurricanes, defeating FAU’s (2-2) Mauricio Paiz and Juan Todero, 8-0 at No. 3 doubles. UM’s 41st-ranked doubles tandem of Tim Krebs (Eschborn, Germany) and Colin Purcell (Louisville, Ky.) then took the double point with a win over the Owls’ David Demers and F. J. Schofield, 8-6 at the No. 1 spot to give Miami a 1-0 advantage heading into singles play.
The Hurricanes continued to roll in singles play with Purcell downing Gianfranco Dossena, 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5 and Hechtman overtaking Daniel McCauley, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 to give Miami an early 3-0 lead over the Owls.
Josh Cohen (Weston, Fla.) then clinched the match for UM with a win in straight sets at the No. 1 position, upending FAU’s Demers, 6-1, 6-2.
Miami’s Jeremiah Fuller (Emmaus, Pa.) and Krebs also took wins over FAU in singles, with Fuller winning, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 and Krebs winning at No. 4, 6-2, 5-7 (10-8).
The Hurricanes will return to action this weekend, hosting Florida A&M on Saturday and in-state rival No. 7 Florida on Sunday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Both matches are slated to begin at noon. Admission is free.
