Canes Fall To Rutgers In Overtime

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP)– Ricky Shields scored 19 points and hit the decisivefree throws with 15 seconds left as Rutgers defeated Miami 72-70 on Wednesdaynight.

Rutgers (13-6, 5-4 Big East) won its fourth straight game while sendingMiami (13-9, 3-5) to its fourth straight loss and its second straight inovertime. The Hurricanes are 0-3 in overtime this year while Rutgers is 2-0.

Rutgers’ Quincy Douby forced overtime with a left-wing jumper with 9.5seconds left, tying it at 59-59.

With the score tied at 61 in overtime, Douby hit a 3-pointer with one secondon the shot clock to give Rutgers a lead it would not relinquish.

Douby added two foul shots and Marquis Webb made one of two free throws togive Rutgers a 67-61 lead.

Miami cut it to 69-67 with 16.5 seconds left and then fouled Shields on theinbounds with 15.0 remaining; Shields made both free throws. After Darius Ricemissed a 3-pointer, Miami kept possession and after a time-out, Guillermo Diazhit a three to make it 71-70 with 1.4 seconds left.

Miami could not get a clean inbounds pass, giving Rutgers its 10th win in 11home games and the first-four game Big East winning streak in school history.
