Bounds, Starks Compete at the World Cup Diving Trials

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami diving team’s Heather Bounds and Derek Starks will travel to Huntersville, N.C. to compete at the 2004 World Cup Diving Trials on Jan. 15-18.

The two freshmen will vie for a spots on USA Diving’s World Cup Team that will compete at the 14th FINA Diving World Cup in Athens, Greece on Feb. 18-22. The World Cup Diving Trials is also considered to be a preview of the U.S. Olympic Diving Team Trials to be held in June.

Bounds, a native of Austin, Texas, enters the competition after taking a first place finish against Kansas on Jan. 9 in the 1-meter springboard with a score of 253.05. Bounds will take part in the women’s synchronized 10-meter platform.

Starks, who hails from Mission Viejo, Calif., will hit the pool after earning his first collegiate victory in the 3-meter springboard against Michigan State on Jan. 2 with a score of 232.50. Starks will compete in the men’s 10-meter platform as well as the synchronized 3-meter springboard and 10-meter platform.

Bounds and Starks, along with former UM divers Kyle Prandi, Katie Beth Bryant and Michelle Davison, will join approximately 75 of the nation’s best divers at the event.
