Miami Swimming and Diving Falls to Rice
Jan. 5, 2004
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s swimming and diving fought to overcome an early deficit before falling to Rice 172.00 to 103.00 on Monday afternoon at the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool.
The Hurricanes took first place in five events, including two top place finishes by junior Katalin Ferenczi who finished first in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke.
“I believe we started out a little passive today,” head swim coach Mariusz Podkoscielny said. “But we fought back to finish hard. I think our slow start may have been the result of back to back meets and Monday is generally an unorthodox day for a meet.”
“Overall, I was very pleased with our team,” Podkoscielny said. “We worked very hard at all aspects of our races and this was a good experience for out team.”
Sophomore Martyna Krawczyk turned in a first place finish for the Hurricanes in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:21.72.
Rice forfeited the diving competition, handing UM a first and second place finish in both the one and three meter springboard.
“I was very happy with Gema Crespo,” Podkoscielny said. “She really had a breakthrough day. This is her senior year and she only has a couple of races left. She is really trying to make the best of it.”
Crespo had a season-best time of 55.36 in the 100-yard freestyle and finished second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time 1:57.29.
The Hurricanes will return to the pool on Friday, Jan. 9 to host Kansas at 4 p.m. at the Norman Whitten Pool.
