Guillermo Diaz Named Big East Rookie Of The Week

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami freshman guard Guillermo Diaz (San Juan, Puerto Rico) was named BIG EAST Co-Rookie of the Week after averaging 17.0 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 3.5 steals per game in leading Miami to a pair of victories.

Diaz, who shares the honor with Rutgers’ Quincy Douby, is the first Hurricane to earn BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honors since Darius Rice on February 19, 2001.

Diaz connected on 12-20 (.600) from the field, including 3-6 (.500) from three-point range, and 7-10 (.700) from the line as Miami recorded wins over Stetson, 91-70, and Florida International, 89-72.

He recorded 19 points, a team-high seven rebounds, three assists and two steals in against Stetson, and 15 points and three assists against Florida International.

Diaz has come off the bench to score in double-figures three times this season and currently ranks third on the team in scoring at 12.3 points per game. This season he has connected on 52.9 percent (27-51) of his field goal attempts including 6-11 (.545) from three-point range.
