Soccer Falls To No. 2 Notre Dame In Overtime

CORAL GABLES, Fla.-The University of Miami soccer team fell 2-1 in overtime to No. 2 Notre Dame in the first round of the BIG EAST tournament at Alumni Field in Notre Dame, Ind. Sunday afternoon.

Miami ends the 2003 season with a record of 9-9-1 overall, while Notre Dame improves to 19-1-1.

The Fighting Irish scored the first goal of the match at 15:47. The 10-yard shot was scored by Katie Thorlakson on a pass from Kimberly Carpenter and Amy Warner.

Miami tied the match two minutes later as Jackie Garcia (Miami, Fla.) scored her first goal of the season at 17:26. Garcia scored the unassisted goal on a 20-yard kick sliding by the ND keeper.

Both teams remained scoreless in the final 40 minutes of regulation.

The Fighting Irish scored just under three minutes in the first overtime period. Amanda Guertin scored the game-winning goal on a 20-yard shot to the upper corner of the net.

Miami goalkeeper Alex Alford (Atlanta, Ga.) played 92:54 minutes in goal making seven saves allowing two goals.

Miami had a total of five shots, compared to 27 for Notre Dame. Britney Butcher (Bothell, Wash.) took four of Miami’s five shots.

UM tallied three shots on goal while ND had 10 shots on goal.

Notre Dame advances to the semifinal round facing Boston College in Piscataway, N.J. Nov. 7.
