Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Lindsey Yach scored a late penalty goal giving the University of Miami soccer team a 2-1 win over BIG EAST opponent Syracuse Sunday afternoon at Cobb Stadium.

The Hurricanes improve to 9-6-1 overall, 3-1-0 in the BIG EAST. The win puts Miami in a Northeast Division first-place tie with Connecticut. Syracuse drops to 8-6-1 overall and 2-2-1 in conference play.

Miami opened scoring in the 33rd minute of play as Britney Butcher (Bothell, Wash.) scored a goal on a head pass from Lindsey Yach (Carrollton, Texas). Butcher tallied a game-high five shots, three on goal.

Kristina Cristofori knocked in the game-tying goal in the second half on a long free kick pass from Natalie Galas.

However, the Hurricanes answered late in the match as Butcher drew a penalty kick after Syracuse goalkeeper Emily Kowalczyk tackled Butcher inside the box. Yach knocked in the penalty kick to give the Hurricanes the lead. Kowalczyk was awarded a red card for the takedown on Butcher.

The Orangewomen edged the Hurricanes in shots 16 to 13 and corner kicks 7 to 5. Additionally, Miami tied the all-time series with Syracuse at 2-2-1.

Preceding the match, Hurricane seniors Michelle Provenzano (Davie, Fla.), Vonda Matthews (Broken Arrow, Okla.) and Mary Luke (Ft. Pierce, Fla.) were honored by the University of Miami soccer team.

The Hurricanes continue conference play as they travel north to face Boston College Friday, October 24 at 7 p.m. in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
