Soccer Earns Shutout Over Virginia Tech

CORAL GABLES, Fla.-The University of Miami soccer team earned a 2-0 shutout victory over BIG EAST Northeast division opponent Virginia Tech Friday night in Blacksburg, Va.
The Hurricanes improve to 8-5-0 overall and 2-1-0 in conference play, while the Hokies fall to 7-6-0 overall and 1-3-0 in conference.
The win over VT puts the Hurricanes in a three-way tie for first place with Syracuse and No. 10 Connecticut in the BIG EAST Northeast division.
Freshman Sheuneen Ta (London, England) scored the first goal for Miami in the second half at the 58 minute mark. Ta’s goal was a shot played after the ball went off of a VT player.
The second goal of the night was from UM leading scorer sophomore Lindsey Yach (Carrollton, Texas). Teammate junior Britney Butcher (Bothell, Wash.) passed Yach the ball in the 81st minute to give the Hurricanes the 2-0 lead.
Freshman goalie Alex Alford (Atlanta, Ga.) made six saves in 90 minutes of action for the Hurricanes.
Miami took a total of 16 shots on the night, while the Hokies took 18. Ten of Miami’s 16 shots were on goal compared to six shots on goal for VT.
The Hokies managed nine corner kicks in the match the most allowed by a Miami team but were still unable to score.
The Hurricanes have five shutouts on the season, improving to 2-0-1 in the all-time series with the Hokies.
Miami plays a cross-divisional match Sunday at 1 p.m. facing No. 2 Notre Dame on the road.
