Soccer Falls To St. John's

CORAL GABLES, Fla.-The University of Miami soccer team fell to St. John’s 3-0 in a BIG EAST matchup Sunday afternoon in Coral Gables, Fla.
The Hurricanes (6-5-0, 1-1-0 BIG EAST) fell to the Red Storm (4-6-1, 1-1-0 BIG EAST) for the first time ever, beating SJU in the last four meetings.
“We have to fight hard every match, the key to this team being ‘great’ is consistency,” said head coach Tricia Taliaferro. “St. John’s came out and took care of business, they had some chances and finished, we just couldn’t finish today.”
The first half was scoreless for both teams; Miami took eight shots while SJU took five in the first 45 minutes of play.
The Red Storm scored their first goal 66 minutes into the match as Mallory Dimaio knocked one in from Kaitlin Schmidt.
Miami created chances for the next 24 minutes of play but was unable to score finishing the match with 16 total shots.
Natasha Lee and Schmidt scored the final two goals for SJU at the 73 and 79 minute mark.
Miami goalie Alex Alford (Atlanta, Ga.) made seven saves on the day while Gabriela Franco made five saves for the Red Storm.
Britney Butcher (Bothell, Wash.) took six of Miami’s 16 total shots.
The Hurricanes travel to face Pittsburgh Friday at 7 p.m.
