Widom Advances To Sweet 16

For the second consecutive year, University of Miami men’s tennis player Todd Widom (Coral Springs, Fla.) advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships Thursday at the University of Georgia when he defeated Rajeev Ram of Illinois 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

With the victory, Widom avenged a regular season loss to the Illini player. It was the first time in his career that Widom had beaten a player from the national champion Illinois team.

Going into the match, Widom was ranked No. 21 according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Ram was ranked No. 20.

Widom will face Seth Rose of South Carolina in the round of 16 Friday. Rose is ranked 48th by the ITA.

The round of 16 begins Friday at 10 a.m.

Andrew Golub and Colin Purcell fell in the NCAA Doubles Tournament Thursday night. The No. 30 ranked duo lost to No. 24 Rodrigo Grilli and Marcin Matakowski of UCLA.

The Hurricanes lost the first set 6-2 before falling 6-2 in the second set.
