Soccer Wraps Up Successful Spring

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami women’s soccer team wrapped up its 2003 spring season with shutout victories in their final two matches and suffering only one loss in nine contests.
The Hurricanes recorded 3-0 home wins over Team Boca U-18 and Florida Premier to cap off the season.
Miami faced nine opponents during the spring, including University of South Florida, Florida Atlantic, University of Georgia and University of North Carolina-Charlotte.
Additionally, the Hurricanes faced IMG Academy, who handed Miami its only loss of the spring season, Region 3, Team Boca U-17, Team Boca U-18 and Florida Premier.
Offensively and defensively the Hurricanes were solid, outscoring their opponents 10 to 3, while recording 5 shutouts.
Head Coach Tricia Taliaferro was pleased with the team’s performance and provided a positive evaluation. “I was very happy with the performance over the spring season. and I felt that everyone contributed in helping us achieve our goals,” said Coach Taliaferro. “The team trained and played at a very high level. We not only saw growth and development as a team, but each player made improvements and commitments on an individual level.”
“The work ethic and enthusiasm of this team is unmatched,” said Coach Taliaferro. “They are beginning to understand what is needed from them individually and collectively to take this team to the next level.”
Taliaferro highlighted several players saying, “the whole team really embraced the new philosophy I brought to Miami and made a smooth transition. I am excited to see players like Michelle Provenzano, Andrea Radice, Britney Butcher, Vonda Matthews, and Ashley Durkee really take their games to a new level in such a short time. I can’t say enough good things about our spring training-I am very pleased!”
The 2003 Soccer season kicks off with preseason training in mid-August. “We’re very excited about the upcoming season. I think this core group of players coupled with the incoming freshman will make it interesting next fall. I can’t wait to see what happens,” said Coach Taliaferro.
The Hurricanes home opener is Tuesday, September 2nd against Florida Atlantic University.
