Victories Earned at the FIRA by the Freshman Eight, Four, and the Silver by the Varsity Eight
April 7, 2003
Members of the University of Miami women’s Second Varsity Eight raced strong this weekend in Tampa, FL, to vie for the title of State Champion in the Varsity Eight event. The University of Miami (UM) finished in a time of 6:19.2 to earn a silver medal, just 5.4 seconds behind the defending state champion University of Central Florida (UCF). UCF pushed out early while Miami was in the pack vying for second. Halfway through the race, Miami broke away to earn their solid second place. The racecourse in Tampa is a seven-lane, 1815m straight course with no current. On both days of racing, a slight tailwind helped push the crews down the course.Assistant Coach Cinda Ewton was pleased with their effort. “Our women put together a great race, which placed them in front of five other first varsity eights from the state of Florida. While it is always nice to win, we are very proud of our team for taking on this challenge. The increased level of competition will only help us further along in the season.”
The highlights of the day were the Freshman/Novice Eights and Fours races, where the UM brought home the State Championship title in two dominating races. The Freshman Eight, coming off a 0.6 victory over Connecticut two weeks ago, clocked a lightning fast 6:17.3 down the course tocapture the gold over the University of Central Florida (6:26.7), Florida State University (7:00.2) and the University of Florida (7:15.7). Four members of the eight raced less than three hours later to take the gold in the Freshman Four event in a time of 6:59.0. “Our freshmen are showing some great speed this year, steadily picking up the pace from race-to-race. We are very excited about our future.”
Additionally, bronze medals were earned in the Women’s Varsity 4+ ‘A’ event as well as the women’s pair. The Varsity 4+ ‘A’won their heat on Friday night, and edged out Jacksonville in thelast 500m in an exciting raceon Saturday to take the final position on the podium.
The Varsity 4+ ‘B’ and the Second Freshman/Novice 8+ both placed second out of three crews in their respective events. The Junior Varsity Four, which combined two members of the Freshman/Novice Eight and the Women’s Pair, placed a strong fourth out of seven entries. On Friday, the UM placed second and fourth in the Freshman/Novice ‘B’ 4+ event.
