Second Varsity team set to compete at the FIRA

The University of Miami women’s rowing Second Varsity team will compete at the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships Saturday, April 5 at the Tampa Bypass in Tampa, Fla.
Miami will have the Junior Varsity Eight race up one level in the FIRA Varsity Eight Event. The Varsity Eight team will be competing at the San Diego Crew Classic this weekend.
The Hurricanes’ Junior Varsity Eight finished in second place last year to the University of Central Florida’s Varsity Eight in the state championships by less than half a second.
“Our Second Varsity Eight has been focusing for the past few weeks on the goal of winning the state championship in the Varsity Eight event,” said head coach Debra Morgan. “It’s definitely a goal that has brought everyone in the crew together. We’re ready for the opportunity to take the state championship.”
“FIRA will be a great opportunity to test our speed in what looks to be an excellent spring season,” said varsity women/recruiting coordinator Cinda Ewton. “We are looking forward to a great regatta.”
Also competing in seperate FIRA event for UM Saturday are the Junior Varsity Four; the Varsity Four; the Varsity “B” Four; the Women’s Pair; the Freshman/Novice squad; the First Novice Eight and Second Novice Eight; and the First, Second and Third Novice Four.
