CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – – When second-singles player Andrew Golub upset No. 93-ranked Toni Gordon with a dramatic 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory, the No. 39-ranked University of Miami men’s tennis team sealed a much needed 5-2 win over No. 32 Texas Christian Thursday night at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
“(The win was) unbelievable for my confidence, but more so for my team,” Golub said. “It’s my senior year and I’m more concerned about the team winning.”
It was the second win Golub had over a ranked opponent in three matches. Saturday, the senior defeated Sander Koning (now ranked No. 84) of Clemson.
“I am so proud of him, I couldn’t be more proud,” coach Bryan Getz said.
At first singles, No. 18-ranked Todd Widom (Coral Springs, Fla.) beat Alex Menichini 6-3, 6-4; Colin Purcell (Louisville, Ky.) defeated Jacopo Tezza 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 at fourth singles; and fifth-singles player Eric Hechtman (Miami, Fla.) toppled Jacob Martin 6-1, 6-3.
UM also swept through doubles for the first point as Purcell and Golub dispatched Gordon and Fabrizio Sestini 8-5; Shauny Hoyes (Key Biscayne, Fla.) and Luis Manrique (Miami, Fla.) defeated Menichini and Daniel Scholten 9-8; and Widom and Hechtman defeated Abreu and Jacob Martin 8-4.
