Hurricanes Topple American University

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami men’s tennis team bounced back from a disappointing loss to Virginia Tech with a convincing 6-1 triumph over American University Tuesday night at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
The No. 36-ranked Hurricanes improved to 7-5 with the win and will hope to carry momentum from the win into Thursday night’s contest with No. 33 TCU.
The nation’s No. 18-ranked collegiate player, Todd Widom, felt that the match was one more stepping stone toward improving his game. Widom suffered a disappointing loss to Saber Kadiri of Virginia Tech Sunday at home.
“My confidence wasn’t shot at all (after the loss to Kadiri), he wore me down, he had a game plan, and he stuck to it,” Widom said. “For me, I know I’m going to win matches and I’m going to lose some matches. I know what I need to do now and that’s get in better shape physically and that’s going to start tonight.”
Widom, a product of JP Taravella High School in Coral Springs, Fla., cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Eagle first-singles player Tushar Garg.
At second singles, Andrew Golub (Miami, Fla.) routed Guillaume Tarralle 6-1, 6-1, while Colin Purcell (Louisville, Ky.) defeated Kyle Bailey 6-0, 6-1 at fourth singles. Eric Hechtman (Miami, Fla.) beat Juan Jaysingh 6-1, 7-6.
At sixth singles, Shauny Hoyes (Miami, Fla.) def. Jonah Fliegelman 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (7) in the night’s final match.
The Hurricanes also took the doubles point. Purcell and Golub defeated Taralle and Garg 8-0 at first doubles and Widom and Hechtman defeated Ruben Rivero and Jaysingh 8-0.
