Va Tech Upsets UM Men's Tennis

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – – The No. 32-ranked University of Miami men’s tennis team was dealt an upset Sunday when it fell 5-2 to No. 49 Virginia Tech at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on the Coral Gables campus.
The Hurricanes appeared to establish momentum when they won the doubles point with particularly tough performances from the pairing of Todd Widom (Coral Springs, Fla.) and Eric Hechtman (Miami, Fla.) and that of Luis Manrique (Key Biscayne, Fla.) and Shauny Hoyes (Miami, Fla.). The Hokies proved resilient, however, in the singles matches.
“In singles, those were all tough matchups,” coach Bryan Getz said. “They won 5-2, we could have easily won 5-2 as well. That’s the thing about tennis. Every matchup is close and you just have to win the key points. Today, they won the important points.”
Each doubles match went down to the wire. At first doubles, Andrew Golub (Miami, Fla.) and Colin Purcell (Louisville, Ky.) lost 9-7 to Stephane Rod and Andreas Lauland.
Manrique and Hoyes defeated Saber Kadiri and Grant Reynolds 8-6 at third doubles and Widom and Hechtman sealed the doubles point when they edged Francis Huot and Michael Kurz 9-8 (3) at second doubles.
Hechtman earned the Hurricanes’ sole singles point when he defeated Kurz 6-3, 6-2 at fifth singles.
The most surprising result of the afternoon was No. 74-ranked Kadiri’s 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 18 Widom at first singles.
The Hurricanes will look to bounce back Tuesday March 11 when they host American University at 6 p.m. in the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
