EAST MEADOW, NY (www.hurricanesports.com) – – The University of Miami continued its dominance over the one-meter diving event Thursday evening in the first day of the BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships.

Miguel Velazquez (Mexico City, Mexico/Gulliver Prep) won the men’s one-meter event with a score of 347.10 in the finals, while Katie Beth Bryant (Chatham, Ill.) won the women’s one-meter with a 507.76. It was the 11th consecutive BIG EAST title in the event for the Hurricanes.

Also in the one-meter diving event, Melanie Rinaldi (Montreal, Canada) and Emily Spychala (Miami, Fla.) finished third (490.10) and fourth (482.10) respectively.

In the team scoring, UM’s women’s team is in third place with 116 points. Notre Dame leads with 175, followed by Rutgers with 165.

“Tonight we had a great start,” said coach James Sweeney. “We had many best times and being (among the leaders) after the first day is where we expected to be. All in all, we are very excited about tomorrow’s events.”

Hurricane sprinter Christine Williams (Trenton, NJ) finished in third place in the 50-yard freestyle event. She tied a personal best in the event with a time of 23.32.

In the women’s 200 IM, Manon Van Rooijen (Westdorpe, Holland) finished third (2:02.26) and Elaine Schwartz (Mt. Laurel, NJ) finished fourth (2:02.51). Van Rooijen’s time was a personal event in that particular event.

“Elaine also had a tremendous swim, finishing in fourth behind teammate Manon,” Sweeney noted.

Swimmers Megan Kinsella (Calgary, Canada) and Adrien Ferguson (Oklahoma City, Okla.) also recorded personal bests while competing in the 200 IM event.

The Hurricanes’ ‘A’ team of Williams, Van Rooijen, Christina Swanson (Bainbridge Island, Va.), and Schwartz finished third in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:33.76). “In the 200 Free Relay, we had some great splits including Elaine Schwartz’s 23.4 and Christine’s leadoff 23.2,” Sweeney said.

Friday will be the second day of the BIG EAST Championships with the preliminary round beginning at 10:30 a.m.
