Feb. 9, 2003
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – – The University of Miami men’s tennis team shocked the No. 10-ranked Texas A&M Aggies 4-3 Sunday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on the Coral Gables campus.
“We’ve never beaten A&M and they’ve been a thorn in our side ever since I’ve been here,” coach Bryan Getz noted after the victory. “They’re a classy program and always a perennial top-10. This is big for us, especially with all of our young kids.”
Going into the match, the Hurricanes were ranked No. 42 in the country.
Andrew Golub (Miami, Fla.) and Colin Purcell (Louisville, Ky.) sealed the doubles point when they defeated Cameron Fenner and John Nallon 8-4 at second doubles.
In singles competition, Eric Hechtman’s (Miami, Fla.) 7-6 (7), 6-3 win over Fenner clinched the match for the Hurricanes.
At first singles, UM’s No. 9-ranked player Todd Widom (Coral Springs, Fla.) defeated Ante Matijevic 6-3, 7-6 (5).
Friday, UM will travel to Gainesville to face rival Florida.
The Gators are ranked No. 6 in the nation and are led by Janne Holmia, who is ranked No. 29 among NCAA Division 1 tennis players.
“The Florida match is huge,” Getz said. “They’re a national contender and obviously any time you play the Gators or the Seminoles it’s huge. But for us, I think going up there and getting experience against (an elite) team like that with all of our young kids is really going to help us down the road.”
