Widom, Krebs, Hoyes Take Wins For Hurricanes
Hurricane singles player Todd Widom, Tim Krebs, and John Hoyes each took wins over their counterparts from William & Mary Saturday in the University of Miami Spring Fling Tennis Tournament.
Widom executed a straight set victory over Sean Kelleher for the match’s most dominant performance. The nation’s Southeast Region’s no. 4 ranked singles player swept aside Kelleher 6-3, 6-0.
In a hard-fought match, Krebs weathered a challenge from Jeffrey Kader for a 7-5, 7-6, 7-5 win. Hoyes cruised in his win over Stephen Ward 6-4, 6-3.
Willam and Mary’s Geoffrey Russell, Alex Fish, and Zack Malmgren took victories over UM’s Eric Hechtman, Colin Purcell, and Luis Manrique respectively.
The Tribe swept the host Hurricanes in doubles play as Kelleher and Ward beat Widom and Manrique 8-4, Russell and Fish beat Krebs and Purcell 8-3, and Kader and Malmgren defeated Hoyes and Hechtman 8-6.
In the earlier match, Clemson’s players won each competition. Nathan Thompson defeated Catalin Bradu 7-6, 4-6, 6-2; Sander Koning thwarted Gabriel Strangberg 4-6, 6-2, 6-1; Jarmaine Jenkins upended Antonio Sierra 6-4, 6-2; Damiisa Robinson toppled Augusto Sanabria 6-1, 1-6, 6-1; Micah Thompson beat Simon Jager 6-2, 6-3; and John Boetsch defeated Paul Rany 6-3, 6-1.
Clemson also took each doubles match as Thompson and Jenkins; Koning and Boetsch; and Robinson and Brett Twenty all secured victories.
Action continues tomorrow as Clemson and William and Mary face off at 9 a.m. The Hurricanes follow with a double-header as they battle Central Florida at 9 a.m., followed by a match versus Clemson at 5 p.m.
