UM To Play Football Series With Texas A&M

June 12, 2002

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami Director of Athletics Paul Dee today announced that the Hurricanes football team will play a two-game, home-and-home series with Texas A&M to be played in 2007 and 2008.

“We’re very excited about the upcoming series with Texas A&M,” said head football coach Larry Coker. “A matchup of Miami versus Texas A&M is sure to generate plenty of national attention as both these programs traditionally play at a high level. Also, we have a lot of fans in Texas as we usually have several players on our team from the state and this will give us a chance to play before our fans in that area.”

“It’s an exciting matchup for us for several reasons,” said athletic director Paul Dee. “Obviously, this will be a series that has national appeal as it will feature two of the nation’s best football programs. Also, it gives us a game against a prominent team from the Big 12 Conference with a road game in one of our primary recruiting areas and it helps us maintain our tradition of playing the best teams in the nation.”

Texas A&M will visit Miami to start the series on September 15, 2007. The Hurricanes will travel to College Station to take on the Aggies at Kyle Field on September 13, 2008.

Miami and Texas A&M have met just once in football. Texas A&M defeated Miami, 70-14, on December 8, 1944. That outcome is the worst loss in UM football history. Miami is 29-18 against teams from the state of Texas, including a 20-8 advantage over Texas teams in games played in Miami and a 9-10 record in games played in Texas. Miami’s most recent visit to Texas was a 45-14 win at Baylor in September, 1997. Against Big 12 opponents, Miami has a record of 30 wins, 19 losses, in 49 contests following the Hurricanes’ 37-14 win over Nebraska in the 2002 Rose Bowl.

The Hurricanes will open the 2002 football season on Saturday, August 31, against Florida A&M at the Orange Bowl. Tickets are on sale now. Fans may call 1-800-GO-CANES to speak with a ticket representative.
