UM To Host Halloween Diving Invitational This Weekend

Coral Gables, FL (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami will host the Halloween Diving Invitational, October 26-27, at the Whitten Student Union Pool on the UM campus.

The event will start at 9 a.m. both days and will feature some of the top divers from around south Florida. Admission is free.

Several UM divers will be competing including two-time All-American Katie Beth Bryant (Chatham, IL), three-time All-American Emily Spychala (Odessa, FL) and 2002 All-American Miguel Velazquez (Mexico City, Mexico).

Bryant, a senior, won the 2002 BIG EAST title in the 3-meter and earned All-America honors in the 1-meter in both 2001 and 2002. Spychala, also a senior, earned All-America honors in the 1-meter and 3-meter at the 2000 NCAA Championships, and earned All-America honors in the 3-meter at the 2001 NCAA Championships. Velazquez, entering his sophomore season, earned All-America honors last season in the 10-meter platform.

In addition to the current Hurricanes, former UM greats and 2002 Olympians Michelle Davison (Columbia, SC) and Imre Lengyel (Budapest, Hungary), as well as the reigning Puerto Rico national champion Angelique Rodriguez, will also be competing. Davison and Lengyel both compete for Miami Diving.

Davison, the 2002 BIG EAST Women’s Diver of the Year, is a finalist for the NCAA National Woman of the Year Award. Lengyel, who was named the 2002 BIG EAST Men’s Diver of the Year, won the 2002 NCAA National Championship in the 10-meter platform.
