Soccer Hosts Stetson In Season Opener

CORAL GABLES, Fla.- The University of Miami women’s soccer team will play host to the Stetson Hatters to open the 2002 season 7 p.m. Friday night at Cobb Stadium.

Miami leads the all-time series 4-0 over Stetson, including a 10-0 victory over the Hatters last season.

First-year head coach Tricia Taliaferro is looking forward to the return of nine starters from last year’s 10-9-1 club.

Taliaferro joins the Miami staff from Illinois where she boasted an overall record of 38-24-3 in three seasons.

In the only exhibition game this season, the Hurricanes tied the club team Ocean Side Express, 1-1. Sophomore Gitana Gotay (Sandy, Utah) scored the goal for UM on a pass from Allison McWhinney (Danvers, Mass.).

Returning from last year’s squad are a number of players with starting experience: 2001 All-BIG EAST players Vonda Matthews and Britney Butcher.

Butcher started all 20 matches to lead the team with 24 points, scoring eight goals and tallying eight assists.

Other top returnees include Miami’s three seniors, goalkeeper Rachel Elsby (Boca Raton, Fla.), defender Lisa Gomez (Boca Raton, Fla.) and midfielder Laura West (Allen, Texas).

The Hurricanes also welcome nine freshmen to this year’s squad.
