Women's Soccer Ties Exhibition Match

CORAL GABLES, Fla.-The University of Miami women’s soccer team tied Ocean Side Express, 1-1, Saturday afternoon in an exhibition match at Cobb Stadium in Coral Gables.
Ocean Side Express scored at 28:18 to take the 1-0 lead over the Hurricanes.
The club team out of New York held Miami scoreless until sophomore Gitana Gotay (Sandy, Utah) scored in the 89th minute of the match on a pass from junior Allison McWhinney (Danvers, Mass.).
Miami was awarded a penalty kick just seconds before the goal, junior Vonda Matthews (Broken Arrow, Okla.) took the penalty kick which was deflected by the Ocean Side Express goalie.
McWhinney crossed the deflected ball to Gotay to connect for the game-tying goal.Miami recorded 10 shots compared to five for Ocean Side Express.
Senior Rachel Elsby (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Sophomore Jennifer Becker (Marietta, Ga.) each played a half in goal for the Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes open the regular season on Aug. 30 hosting Stetson at 7 p.m.
