March 1, 2002
Gainesville, FL (hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami freshman Lauryn Williams (Rochester, PA) broke her own school-record in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.85 at the Nike Fast Times Meet in Gainesville, FL.
Williams, the 2002 BIG EAST Most Outstanding Indoor Track Athlete, was the top collegiate finisher Thursday evening. Tanya Lawrence, running unattached, won the event by just three one-hundredths of a second (6.82).
Williams has recorded four victories in 55-meters and 60-meters this season and has finished no worse than second in all six meets in which she has competed. Two weeks ago the freshman phenom was named the 2002 BIG EAST Most Outstanding Track Athlete after winning both the 60-meters and 200-meters at the Conference Championships in Syracuse, NY.
Also competing on Thursday was All-American Patricia Pearson (Jacksonville, FL) who finished third in the 800-meters with an NCAA provisional time of 2:09.24.
On the men’s side, senior Gus Martin (Miami Northwestern) finished seventh in the 55-meter hurdles (7.40).
