Feb. 27, 2002
Spring practice is approaching quickly and the National Champions already have first place votes in some early pre-season polls. On nationalchamps.net, the 2002 College Football Preview has the Hurricanes locked into the number one spot. But five of the Hurricanes’ 2002 opponents are also ranked in the top 25. With one of the toughest schedules ahead, Miami will face the #4 ranked Florida State, #5 Tennessee, #6 Florida, #18 Boston College and #20 Virginia Tech.
Following the recruiting news from Signing Day, Sportsline.com released their pre-season top 25 which also has Miami sitting on top even with what they described as a “pure nasty” schedule. Sportline.com ranked Florida State #4, Tennessee #5, Virginia Tech #10 and Florida #11.
Finally, Tom Dienhart from the Sporting News looks at the likely leaders for the 2002 season and says that Miami and Florida “have to get consideration.” The Hurricanes may be everyone’s pre-season No. 1 team even though players like running back Clinton Portis, tight end Jeremy Shockey and cornerback Phillip Buchanon have opted to turn pro.”
