Swimming & Diving Gear Up for BIG EAST Championships

Coral Gables, Fla. – Miami travels to the Nassau County Aquatics Centerin Uniondale, N.Y. for the 2002 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships onFebruary 21-23.

For the men’s diving team, senior Imre Lengyel (Budapest, Hungary), 2001 BIG EASTOutstanding Diver Kyle Prandi (Strongsville, Ohio) and freshman Miguel Velazquez(Mexico City) currently hold the top three scores in the conference in both the3-meter and the platform. Prandi is the reigning national champion in the 10-meterplatform.

Freshman Joshua Laban (Virgin Islands) has the fastest times for the men’s swimteam in four events: 50 free (21.51) set at Florida Atlantic (2/02/02), 100 free(47.30)set at the U.S. Open (11/30/01), 100 breast (1:00.18) set at Florida Atlantic(2/2/02) and 200 breast (2:14.71) set vs Clemson/Rutgers (1/5/02).

Senior Wesley Stoddard (Huntsville, Ala.) has the fastest times for the team infive events: 500 free (4:38.13) set at the U.S. Open (11/30/01), 1000 free (9:42.85)set vs Clemson/Rutgers (1/5/02), 1650 Free (16:11.48) set at the U.S. Open (11/30/01),200 IM (1:58.96) set at North Florida (1/18/02) and 400 IM (4:07.09) set at theU.S. Open (11/30/01).

The Miami women’s swim team features freshman Katalin Ferenzci (Papa, Hungary)who broke the school record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.45 onFebruary 9th at the Miami-IRCC meet. Ferenzci holds the top times this seasonfor the team in the 100 and 200 back.

Sophomore Manon van Rooijen (Westdorpe, Holland) currently holds the school recordin the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:48.36. Van Rooijen has finished firstin seven different events this season: 50 free (24.28) vs University of Denveron 12/14/01, 100 free (52.18) vs Clemson on 1/05/02, 200 free (1:51.10) at PittsburghInvitational on 11/16/01, 500 free (5:07.30) at Gator Relays on 10/20/01, 100back (59.42) vs North Florida on 1/19/02, 200 IM (2:07.25) vs North Florida on1/19/02 and 100 fly (57.66) vs University of Denver on 12/14/01.

Junior Elaine Schwartz (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) holds the top times for the team thisseason in the 1000 free (10:33.71), 200 IM (2:04.85) and 400 IM (4:23.06).

In women’s diving, senior Michelle Davison (Columbia, S.C.) has the top scoresin the 1- and 3-meter events: 1-meter (304.30) at Florida on 10/20/01, 3-meter(359.00) at SMU Classic on 11/2/02.
