Men's Tennis Hosts Season-Opener Against FAU.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – – The No. 18 ranked University of Miami men’s tennis team will host its 2002 season-opener against No. 48 FAU on Thursday, January 24 at 6 p.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on the UM Campus.

FAU (1-0) defeated Lynn University, 5-1, in its season-opener.

The men’s tennis team, guided by Head Coach Jay Berger, is coming off an impressive 21-4 season and a NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen appearance. They finished the 2000-2001 campaign with a No. 11 final national ranking and a seventh BIG EAST Conference championship title.

The Hurricanes have six letterwinners returning for the 2001-2002 season and have lost only three to graduation.

Miami has three newcomers, including freshman standout Todd Widom (Coral Springs, Fla.). Widom had an impressive 9-2 fall season record, including an appearance at the quarterfinals of the ITA Regional Champions.

Florida Atlantic is coming off its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and its first Atlantic Sun Conference championship title. Head Coach Alex Alcantara enters his first season with the Owls.
