Dorsey A Finalist For Maxwell Award
Nov. 29, 2001
PHILADELPHIA – University of Miami junior quarterback Ken Dorsey has been named one of three finalists for the 2001 Maxwell Award honoring college football’s Player of the Year.
The award, presented annually since 1937, honors the nation’s top all-around college football player. Quarterback Drew Brees of Purdue was the 2000 recipient.
Joining Dorsey as finalists for the Maxwell Award are quarterback Eric Crouch of Nebraska and quarterback Rex Grossman of Florida. The winner is scheduled to be presented live during ESPN’s College Football Awards Show to be held in Orlando on Thursday, December 6, beginning at 9 p.m. Eastern Time.
Dorsey has led the Hurricanes to the national polls while leading one of the nation’s most balanced and explosive offenses. In Miami’s first eight games of the season, the Hurricanes have averaged 44.9 points per game (third in NCAA Division I) while throwing for 251.7 yards per contest and rushing for 210.2 yards per game. Miami’s potent attack has devastated opponents on a weekly basis and Dorsey has been at the center of it all. The most consistent performer among all of the hopefuls for national honors, Dorsey has thrown for 2,417 yards and 22 touchdowns in the 2001 season – and he’s done so while playing in the fourth period of just three of those contests.
The winner of the 2001 Maxwell Award will be honored at the organization’s annual awards dinner on February 26, 2002, in Philadelphia.
