CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami senior offensive tackle Bryant McKinnie and senior free safety Edward Reed have been named First-Team All-Americans by Football News magazine, the publication announced Wednesday.

This marks the second consecutive season that McKinnie has made the Miami-based publication’s All-America first team as Miami also placed two players on Football News’ first team in 2000 with departed linebacker Dan Morgan joining McKinnie last year. McKinnie, who has not allowed a quarterback sack in his playing career, is a contender for the Outland Trophy after reaching the semifinal round of the Lombardi Award voting. McKinnie, also a finalist for the magazine’s Offensive Player of the Year Award, is coming off a highlight performance last Saturday in which he held fellow first-teamer Dwight Freeney of Syracuse without a quarterback sack.

Reed is making his first appearance on the Football News All-America team after earning consensus First-Team All-America honors in 2000. The senior free safety has produced blocked kicks and turnovers that have led to 106 points for the Hurricanes during his Miami career and currently leads the nation in interceptions per game at 0.78 with 7 pickoffs this season. Reed has tied the UM career interceptions with 19 thefts and holds the school career mark for interception return yards with 378.

Additionally, Miami senior offensive tackle Joaquin Gonzalez was named to the publication’s third-team on Wednesday. Gonzalez, a first-team All-American by the Football Writers Association in 2000, has allowed only two sacks in his collegiate career and is on pace to break the Miami record for starts in a career. Gonzalez has started all 46 games since donning a Miami uniform beginning with the 1998 season.
