UM Soccer Earns Win Over USF, 2-0

CORAL GABLES, Fla.– The University of Miami women’s soccer team (10-7-1) shutout South Florida (4-12-2), 2-0, in its regular season finale at Cobb Stadium Wednesday night.
The Hurricanes will now play No. 24 West Virginia in the first round of the eight-team BIG EAST Championship on Sunday, November 4 at 1 p.m. at Mountaineer Soccer Complex in Morgantown, WV.
The Hurricanes got on the scoreboard in the 15th minute when freshman Britney Butcher (Bothell, Wash.) tapped in a rebound off of a shot that deflected off USF goalkeeper Breck Bankester.
After taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, UM came out strong in the second half adding its second goal in the 89th minute as Lisa Gomez (Boca Raton, Fla.) scored her fourth goal of the season on a pass from Butcher.
After tonight’s performance Butcher now leads the team with eight goals and eight assists for a total of 24 points on the season.
Senior Elizabeth Swinson (Boca Raton, Fla.) played all 90 minutes making four saves and allowed no goals in the game-winning effort.
The Hurricanes out-shot USF in the match 19-14 while the Bulls held the advantage on corner kicks 6-2.
The game against USF was also Senior Night. The Hurricanes honored five graduating seniors prior to the start of the match, Deidre Bass (Coral Springs, Fla.), Alexis Mackenzie (Plantation, Fla.), Jordan Sims (Bradenton, Fla.), Jennifer Sanchez (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and Swinson. Sanchez and Bass are part of the Hurricanes inaugural team in 1998.
