Florida Defeats Miami in Gainesville

Gainesville, Fla. – (www.hurricanesports.com) – The University of MiamiSwimming and Diving team competed in Gainesville, Fla. at the Stephen C. O’ConnellCenter Natorium on Saturday.
In the morning, the women’s team competed in the Florida Relays which consistedof eight relay events. Miami finished behind host Florida (152) and Michigan (120)with 70 points.
The Miami relay team of Elaine Schwartz (Mt. Laurel, N.J.), Kristy MacLennan (Toronto,Canada), Courtney Caples (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) and Megan Kinsella (Calgary, Canada)won the 400 yard IM relay with a time of 4:02.62.
The men’s and women’s teams later competed in a double-dual meet with Floridaand Indian River Community College. The men lost to Florida 77-26 and the womenlost 61-50.
Sophomore Manon van Rooijen won the women’s 500 yard freestyle with a time of5:07.30. In the 200 yard freestyle relay, the UM team of Megan Kinsella, ErinJohns, Manon van Rooijen and Christine Williams finished first with a time of1:38:75.
The best finish for the men swimmers belonged to senior Wesley Stoddard (Huntsville,Ala.) who finished second in the 400 yard IM with a time of 4:09.79 and fourthin the 500 yard freestyle (4:47.46).
Miami dominated in the diving events. In the women’s 3 meter, sophomore MelanieRinaldi (MteNord, Canada) captured first (300.15) and senior Michelle Davidsonfinished second (267.30). Davidson won the 1 meter diving event with a score of304.30 while Rinaldi finished second (267.10).
For the men in the 3 meter diving event, senior Imre Lengyel (Budapest, Hungary)finished second (325.50), Miguel Velazquez finished third (307.65) and juniorKyle Prandi (Strongsville, Ohio) finished fifth (270.45). In the 1 meter event,Lengyel took first with a score of 351.97, Velazquez third (298.65) and Prandifourth (294.45).
Miami returns home to Coral Gables to host Florida Atlantic on Saturday, October27th at 1 p.m.
