Women's Rowing Launches Season With Head Of The Indian Creek Regatta

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – The University of Miami varsity women’s crew launch the 2001 fall racing season with the ninth annual Head of the Creek Regatta on Sunday, October 7 at Indian Creek near the UM Boathouse at the Ronald Shane Watersports Center on Miami Beach.
Joining the Hurricanes at the Head of the Creek are Central Florida and Barry, plus an assortment of rowing clubs from around the state.
Last season, the varsity women nearly swept all the races it entered, placing first in three of four events. Highlighting the 2000 races was the UM championship four entries, which placed first and second with times of 17:52:72 and 18:03:31, respectively. UCF, UM’s top in-state rival, placed third (20:11:07).
Much of the same is expected from a varsity women’s crew that has an equal blend of returning varsity rowers, former UM novice rowers and touted recruits. Returning members from last season’s varsity crew are Trisha Blackwell, Ananda Chou, Dorothy Clay, Bridget Gallagher, Jordanna Heywood, Jacqui Julien, Margaret Knuth, Jenny Krawec, Bernadette Lack, Jenny Lee, Monika Manios, Caroline Stuart, Stephanie Tilley, Amanda Turner, Marijka VanderPol, Meaghan Venezia and Katherine Weeden.
First-year varsity rowers who have elevated from the UM novice program are Tracy Anzalone, Sara Grossman, Laraine Martin, Russlee Panepinto, Yennisha Pinto, Evangelina Prevolis, Sasha Pryborowski, Allison Rand, April Runkle and Rachel Sander. The new members to the varsity women’s crew are freshman Julie Crane, Deirdre Curran, Yassi Hairinia, Tyler McHugh-Merrill, Elizabeth Miller, Ali Nelson, Jillian Rowe, Melissa Saunders and Lillian Scovazzo.
The Regatta’s racing begins at 8 a.m. and concludes at 1 p.m. with an awards ceremony. The Ronald W. Shane Watersports Center is located off 6500 Indian Creek Drive, just north of the 63rd street bridge in Miami Beach. The finish line will be at Brittany Bay Park, located on the creek side of Indian Creek Drive just before 65th street.
