Swimmers To Hold Intrasquad Meet This Saturday
Oct. 4, 2001
Coral Gables, FL – The University of Miami Swimming and Diving team will hold an Intrasquad Meet this Saturday, October 6 beginning at 9 a.m. at the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool on the UM campus.
Admission is free.
The UM women may have lost two-time NCAA Diving Champion Jenny Keim to graduation but the Hurricanes have a lot of talent remaining from last year’s squad that finished 14th at the NCAA Championships.
Miami returns three All-American divers including junior Katie Beth Bryant, senior Emily Spychala and senior Michelle Davidson. Bryant is the defending BIG EAST Champion in the 1-meter springboard.
In the swimming events the Hurricanes will look to sophomore Manon van Rooijen. As a freshman, van Rooijen broke the school-record in the 200-freestyle, and finished second in the 200-yard freestyle and third in 100-yard freestyle to lead Miami to a fifth-place finish at the BIG EAST Championships.
In 2000, van Rooijen won a silver medal at the Olympic games as a member of Holland’s 4×100-meter freestyle relay.
The UM men will once again be led a strong group of divers. Leading the way will be 2001 BIG EAST Diver of the Year and defending NCAA 10-meter champion Kyle Prandi.
Also returning are seniors Stefan Ahrens and Imre Lengyel. Both competed at the 2000 Olympic games in Sydney, Australia. Lengyel finished 9th in the 3-meter at the World Championships for his native Hungary earlier this summer.
