No. 14 Soccer Falls To FIU 2-1 In Overtime

CORAL GABLES, Fla.- No. 14-ranked Miami soccer team snaps its five-match win streak with a 2-1 overtime loss to FIU Thursday night at Cobb Stadium.
The overtime loss marks the first loss of the season for UM as they fell to 5-1-0 on the season. FIU improves to 4-1-0 on the year and takes the nod in the all-time series with a 3-2 lead.
The Hurricanes scored first at 14:09 as Alexis MacKenzie (Plantation, Fla.) completed a cross to Vonda Matthews (Broken Arrow, Okla.) for the goal and the 1-0 lead.
Ten minutes later the Golden Panthers tied the game one-all as Sasja Odenyo scored on a deflected ball by Miami’s goalkeeper Rachel Elsby (Boca Raton, Fla.).
The Hurricanes took six shots the second half but were unable to connect as FIU goalkeeper Amy Staley made five saves.
Both teams remained scoreless in the second half, sending the match into overtime for the second year in a row.
Two minutes into overtime FIU’s Michele O’Brien scored the game-winning goal on a pass from Odenyo and Nicola Bell.
FIU goalkeeper Staley tallied nine saves in the winning effort, while UM goalie Elsby made five saves.
Miami took six corner kicks, compared to two for FIU. The Hurricanes outshot FIU 15 to 12.
The Hurricanes open conference play Sunday at 1 p.m. playing host to No. 18 Syracuse.
