No. 14 Soccer Plays Host To FIU

CORAL GABLES, Fla.-The No. 14-ranked Miami soccer team looks to extend its five-match winning streak as it plays host to cross-town rival Florida International Thursday at 7 p.m. at Cobb Stadium.
The Hurricanes enter the contest 5-0-0, their best start in school history. UM recently shutout the No. 20-ranked Florida Gators, 1-0, in Gainesville, Fla. The win was the first-ever for Miami against a ranked opponent and the first against the Gators.
FIU enters the contest with a record of 3-1. The all-time series is knotted at two-all, with the Golden Panthers winning the last meeting, 3-2, at FIU last season.
Junior midfielder Laura West (Allen, Texas) has been impressive offensively, leading the team and the BIG EAST in points with 10. She also leads the team with four goals on the season.
Senior defender Deidre Bass (Coral Springs, Fla.) earned several honors last week as she led the Hurricanes to a 3-0 week. Bass was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, after the Hurricanes recorded two shutouts and allowed one goal in wins against FAU, UCF and Florida. She also was named to the Soccer Buzz National Elite Team and the Soccer America Team of the Week.
Junior goalkeeper Rachel Elsby (Boca Raton, Fla.) ranks second in the BIG EAST in goals against average posting a 0.80. She also garnered BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honors after recording two shutouts, making her UM’s all-time leader with 10.5 in her career. She recorded seven of her total 20 saves in the win over the Gators.
