Coach Coker
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami football team completed its first day of practices with the full team, officially starting preparations for the 2001 season and the opener against the Penn State Nittany Lions coming up on September 1. Head Coach Larry Coker and his staff welcomed the varsity back to work in the morning session and said he was pleased with the first day of work.
“While we’re certainly not in game shape at this point, I was very pleased with our players today both for their fitness and their approach to things,” Coker said. “I told the guys to not be too concerned about being game-ready at this point, but to focus on the actual work at hand. I thought the receivers and the defensive line really stood out today. The receivers made more plays today in seven-on-seven drills than they did in the entire spring practice. The defensive line was excellent today, as well. So I was very encouraged with those two areas of our team, in particular.”
Miami continues two-a-days with a pair of workouts Saturday at the Greentree Practice Fields. The morning session takes place at 8:30 with an afternoon workout commencing at 3:30 p.m. The Hurricanes will only have one practice on Sunday, that workout slated for 3:30 p.m. Coker also announced that the team’s first scrimmage of the fall will take place during the afternoon practice on Wednesday, August 15, beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Greentree.
Practices are open to the public through August 15. All workouts are closed to the public beginning Thursday, August 16, with regular media policies going into effect at that time.
The Hurricanes begin the 2001 season Saturday, September 1, at Penn State in a nationally televised contest (ABC Sports). Kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
