May 12, 2001
CORAL GABLES, Fla.–Coach Jay Berger’s 12th-ranked Hurricanes had a lot to celebrate after their 4-0 victory over the 69th-ranked Charleston Southern Buccaneers Saturday afternoon. The win advanced Miami to the second round of the NCAA Regional tournament for the first time since the 1997 season and improved the Hurricanes to their first 20-win season since 1994.
“I was really pleased with the way our guys played today,” said Berger. “We came out focused against a very good Charleston Southern team and were able to take control of the match.”
The No. 1-seeded Hurricanes (20-3) will face the No. 3 seed Minnesota (13-11) Sunday at Noon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children, students and senior citizens.
No. 46 Minnesota advances after knocking off No. 14 Alabama 4-1 Saturday morning.
“Minnesota is playing extremely well and we will need to come out with the same intensity in order to win,” said Berger.
Miami won the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The Hurricanes went on to take control of the match with straight set wins at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
