Women's Rowing Completes Season At BIG EAST Challenge

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – Syracuse won the first BIG EAST Women’s Rowing Challenge on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, MA. The University of Miami varsity finished in sixth place among the nine crews that competed.
Following Syracuse (107) in the overall point standings were Notre Dame (93), Rutgers (79), Boston College (75), Georgetown (74), Miami (57), Villanova (54), Connecticut (42) and West Virginia (28).
UM’s varsity eight, consisting of coxswain Jenny Lee, Jenny Krawec, Monika Manios, Jacqui Julien, Dorien Ten Have, Amanda Turner, Bridget Gallagher, Yianna Reizakis and Marijka VanderPol, finished fourth in the Grand Final with a time of 6:43.00. The Orangewomen won the race with a time of 6:29.59, ahead of Rutgers (6:35.58) and Notre Dame (6:37.36). UM placed ahead of Boston College (6:45.02) and Villanova (6:58.71).
The second varsity eight with coxswain Meg Venezia, Bernadette Lack, Jordanna Heywood, Ananda Chou, Caroline Stewart, Stephanie Tilley, Trisha Blackwell, Maggie Knuth and Dorothy Clay finished in fifth place in its Grand Final with a time of 7:02.5. Syracuse won the second varsity eight final with a time of 6:42.30.
The novice eight placed second in the Petite Final, behind Villanova, with a time of 7:48.72. The novice four placed sixth in its Grand Final.
Following races on April 23, the NCAA Women’s Rowing Committee released its regional rankings and had the Hurricanes’ varsity eight rated third in the South Region, behind Virginia and Clemson. UM’s second varsity eight places sixth in the South, behind Virginia, Clemson, Tennessee, Texas and North Carolina. The UM women’s program holds a No. 6 ranking.
