No. 14 Men's Tennis Opens Against No. 56 Virginia Tech

CORAL GABLES, Fla.–The 14th-ranked University of Miami men’s tennis team will take on No. 56 Virginia Tech in Saturday’s semifinal round of the BIG EAST Men’s Tennis Championships starting at Noon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables.

Miami, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, received a first round bye. No. 3-seeded Virginia Tech advanced with a 4-0 win over No. 6 Boston College Friday afternoon.

The Hurricanes are hosting the tournament for the ninth consecutive season. The Hurricanes have won six of the last eight BIG EAST Championships, including a 5-2 win over Notre Dame to win the title last season.

Top-seeded Notre Dame ranked 12th nationally will also begin play Saturday against No. 4 Rutgers beginning at 9 a.m. Rutgers moved into the semifinals with a 4-3 victory over No. 5 St. John’s.

Miami and Notre Dame have dominated the BIG EAST over the last several seasons. One of the two has won the championship every season since 1993. The two have faced off for the championship in each of the last five seasons with UM winning three times.

No. 5 St. John’s will face No. 6 Boston College in the first match of the consolation bracket.
