April 11, 2001
Coral Gables, FL (www.hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami Athletic Department has entered into a five-year partnership with the City of Hialeah that will focus on the youth of the city and its athletic programs.
The grass roots partnership will allow the Hurricanes to reach out to the community and create opportunities for local youths to participate and enjoy athletics through open clinics and other activities that will enhance the City’s extensive parks department.
The first joint venture between UM and the City of Hialeah is the opening of the gymnasium at Bucky Dent Park. The gymnasium’s grand opening will take place on Thursday, April 12 at 6:00 p.m.
The $1.7 million state-of-the-art facility is the first of its kind in the City’s comprehensive inventory of parks. By joining forces with the UM Athletic Department, the City of Hialeah was able to provide the community with a showcase facility that includes the Hurricanes’ colors and logos on the floor.
The 15,625 square foot building will seat 600 people and will include a multi-purpose gymnasium consisting of one official basketball and volleyball court, two practice basketball and volleyball courts, electronic scoreboards, men’s and women’s locker rooms, a recreation room, a meeting room and an arts and crafts room.
Grand opening ceremonies will begin promptly at 6 p.m. Media interested in covering the event should contact Robert L. Walker at (305) 687-2664.
