Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – The University of Miami men and women crews will be hosting a pair of races this Saturday, March 24, at the Hurricanes home course on Indian Creek in Miami Beach.
The women will be racing Connecticut and UCF, while the men will race UCF and Florida Tech.
The event will feature 11 races, from 9 a.m. through 11:30 a.m., then will conclude with a special boat christening ceremony of a women’s eight, the “Liz Dee”, at Noon. Lunch will be served following.
“Paul Dee has been a tremendous force in bringing this upgrade along,” commented Head Crew Coach Joe O’Connor. “Every year he has continued to push forward the commitment he made in 1997. The team and I owe him a large debt of gratitude.”
The Hurricanes will be racing its first and second varsity eight, varsity pair, novice eight, and novice four.
The 2001 varsity women’s eight consists of Jenny Krawec, Monika Manios, Jacqui Julien, Dorien Ten Have, Mandy Turner, Bridget Gallagher, Yianna Reizakis, Marijka VanderPol and coxswain Meg Venezia. The second varsity eight features Jordanna Heywood, Bernadette Lack, Lindsey Tarabula, Cathy Dunnet, Caroline Stewart, Ananda Chou, Dorothy Clay, Maggie Knuth and coxswain Jenny Lee. Blackwell and Tilley will row the varsity pair.
UM Crew is housed at the Ron Shane WaterSports Center at 6500 Indian Creek Drive. To go to the races from the University, travel north on I-95 to exit 7, the 195 Causeway to Miami Beach. Continue on the Causeway east on 41st street. Make a left on Collins Avenue. The finish line is located at 5330 Collins Avenue. There is a park area on the West side of Collins Avenue at the finish line. Public parking is located at 5300 Collins Avenue on the East side of the street. The boat christening ceremony will take place at the Rowing Center. You can drive or walk from the finish line (it is one mile) by taking Collins Avenue to 65th street and turning left at 65th. Continue one block and you will be in the WaterSports Center parking lot. The boathouse phone number is 305-861-1295.
